Termites can be beneficial in nature, but not in our homes. These tiny, winged insects eat the construction materials in buildings. Many homeowners don’t pay attention to subtle signs of termites, only to be faced by thousands of dollars worth of repairs when the infestation finally becomes apparent. Here are 3 signs you should look out for.
1. Hollow Timber
Termites consume wood from the inside out, leaving it hollow inside. One of the most common signs of termites can be detected by knocking on wood. If it sounds hollow inside, termites are likely behind it. In more serious cases, knocking on termite infested wood will cause it to cave in.
2. Sounds Inside the Wall are Signs of Termites
Do you hear strange sounds coming from inside the wall? Termites tap the walls with their heads to communicate with one another. It’s their signal to alert others in the colony of danger. The worker termite also makes noise when eating, which can be heard if you listen carefully with your ear against the wall. If you notice strange sounds coming from inside the wall, you should schedule a pest inspection.
3. Frass
Frass, or termite droppings, is another common sign of termites in the home. Frass is especially common when drywood termites infest the home. Subterranean termites use their feces for building tunnels, so you are less likely to notice piles of it around the house. It looks like coffee grounds that has been pushed out of holes in the wall.
Don’t Ignore the Signs of Termites
The three signs of termites listed here are only a handful of the many signs that indicate a termite infestation. Termites can cause thousands of dollars in damage within a relatively short time. It’s important that you schedule regular termite inspections to learn about any developing problems.
